PREFERENCE

Preferences can used when someone will give commands, offering something or ask other people's opinions about what should be (better) done.

The KINDS of PREFERENCE :

1. Prefer
2. Would Rather
3. Like
4. Would Prefer To
5. Had Better
6. It’s Time
7. Instead of

   1.   PREFER

PATTERN :

    S + Prefer + to infinitive

    S + Prefer + Nouns + to + Nouns

    S + Prefer + Gerund + to + Gerund

EXAMPLE :

    They prefer to go now

    I prefer rice to bread

    She prefers singing to dancing

   2.    WOULD RATHER

PATTERN :

    S + would rather + V1

    S + would rather + Inf +than + Infinitive

    S + would rather + Inf + Noun + than + Inf + Noun

    S + would rather + someone + V2

EXAMPLE

—  I would rather study now

—  She would rather sing than dance

—  I would rather have rice than bread

—  I would rather you went now

  3.  LIKE

PATTERN

 S + Like + Nouns/Gerunds

 S + like +gerunds + better than + gerund

 S + like + noun + better than + noun

EXAMPLE

    I like singing a song

    She likes singing better than dancing

    I like rice better than bread

   4.  WOULD PREFER TO

PATTERN :

o   S + Would Prefer to + infinitive + rather than + inf

o   S + would Prefer to + infinitives + Nouns + rather than + infinitives + Nouns

EXAMPLE

    They would prefer to sing rather than dance

    You would prefer to play ball rather than take a sleep

  5.  HAD BETTER

PATERN :

    S + had better + infinitive

    S + had better + not + infinitive

EXAMPLE

   You had better study hard

   You had better not work on Sundays

  6.  IT’S TIME

PATTERN :

—  It’s time + to infinitives

—  It’s time + Subject + V2

EXAMPLE

—  It’s time to get up

—  It’s time you went away

   7.     INSTEAD OF
Is using to replace : to, than, better than, rather than

PATTERN :

Instead of + Gerund/Nouns

EXAMPLE

—  I prefer staying home instead of going out

—  They would rather eat their lunch instead of work
